There are a few documents that will be necessary for you to fly your aircraft at all, which includes your registration and the aircraft’s aircraft airworthiness certificate. While most people seem to have a grasp on the former one, the latter one tends to give them some trouble. Allow us to take a deeper look at what this particular document will entail for you and your registration process?

What is an Aircraft Airworthiness Certificate

In accordance with Transport Canada rulings meant to regulate and create a standard when it comes to national aviation, it will be necessary for all aircraft to receive an airworthiness certificate that deems them suitable for regular use. After all, flying an aeroplane is not something to be taken lightly. For the sake of personal and public safety, it’s important that before any aircraft sets flight, it is properly evaluated and certified. This process is fairly straightforward, but it will call for a few different components of the aircraft to be thoroughly tested and looked at. Once that’s done, you will be able to apply for an aircraft airworthiness certificate.

What Needs to Be Certified?

According to Transport Canada, there are certain components of the process that will define the overall application for an aircraft airworthiness certificate. These are the following:

  • Aircraft Design, Structure, Avionics – The first step in the road to certifying an aircraft is airworthy will be to determine whether or not the design and structure are suitable to fly in a safe and responsible way.
  • Electrical and Mechanical Systems – Next, the certification team will take a look at the mechanical and electrical systems that allow for flight to take place and whether they are up to the task or not.
  • Power Plants – The aircraft’s power plants need to be evaluated for safety and efficiency in order to ensure its proper functioning.
  • Equipment – All additional equipment in the aircraft will also need to be evaluated and certified a part of the airworthiness process.
  • Engineering Flight Tests – Lastly, the aircraft will be evaluated by way of particular engineering flight tests that will further confirm that the aircraft in question is ready to be operated regularly.

How Are These Approved?

So, these are very specific components of an aircraft’s structure. How are they going to be evaluated? Well, like anything else, it’s a process, but it will be done by:

  • Reviewing and verifying the design and performance data;
  • Supervising and performing several ground and flight tests; and
  • Ultimately awarding the relevant Transport Canada type certificates.

Selling your aircraft to a fellow Canadian citizen or resident is fairly easy and will mostly just involve transferring your registration to them. Exporting the aircraft, on the other hand, will call for an airplane airworthiness certificate, as well as its own process altogether.

Export Airplane Airworthiness Certificate

Like any export procedure, exporting aircraft will involve a comprehensive process that will make sure two things are taken care of. One, that the aircraft in question is qualified to operate in the country where it’s going to be registered from now on, which is done by way of an export airplane airworthiness certificate. Two, that the plane is no longer registered here in Canada.  Let’s take a closer look at how this process works.

The Process Explained

Exporting anything will always come with a very particular process attached to it, and this will only be more evident when it comes to something as large, expensive, and logistically challenging as aircraft. This is why it’s always good to have the process itself clearly explained to you so that you can always make sure that you’re meeting all the necessary requirements. Here are the main five steps in the process:

  1. Remove the Canadian nationality and registration marks from the aircraft.
  2. If applicable, remove the aircraft mark plate.
  3. Request in writing that Transport Canada, Civil Aviation deletes the registration of your aircraft (which you can do by using the de-registration form on our website).
  4. Remove the aircraft Mode S Transponder address code and, if necessary, apply for an export airplane airworthiness certificate when required.
  5. Be sure to provide the aircraft’s specific documentation along with the request.

Moving Your Aircraft to Canada

The export airplane airworthiness certificate will be very important if you’re looking to move the aircraft out of Canada. In order to receive it, you will have to fill out a form, which will call for your contact information, the name and address of the exporter, as well as that of the buyer, and the aircraft information. This will include data about the engines, propellers, and manufacturer. Once you have the export airworthiness certificate, you will be able to carry on with the export process, but it’s not exactly done for, as the prior requirement list might indicate. This certificate will only deem your aircraft suitable for export and it won’t cover the rest of the documentation necessary to take the plane’s registration off the Canadian aircraft registry.

What Comes Next?

Once you have the export documents in order, you will need to apply to deregister the plane from Transport Canada’s registry. That is why we at the National Aviation Registration are here to lend a hand. Our platform has every form relevant to the aircraft documentation processes, making it easy for you to not just find the airplane airworthiness certificate and deregistration forms, but also to fill it out and submit it to Transport Canada. If you need help at any step in the process, all you have to do is give us a call at 1-800-998-3527 or email us at info@canadianaircraftregistry.ca. We’ll make sure you get the assistance you need.
